‘Onipa’a, an annual reminder of the illegal overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom

Commemoration calls on Kanaka Maõli to unite and persevere

January 17 was not only opening day for the Hawai’i State Legislature, it also was the 131st annual commemoration of the illegal overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom. ‘Onipa’a is a word used by Hawai’iʻs former Queen, Liliuokalani, which means “steadfast.” Itʻs used for the commemoration today as a way to encourage persistence among the Kanaka Maõli to unite and stay community-engaged to tell their stories.
