Former Wall Street Journal editor shares change patterns

Veteran journalist Joanne Lipman rose from staff writer to Deputy Managing Editor at The Wall Street Journal, the first woman to hold that position. She served as editor-in-chief of The Wall Street Journal’s Weekend section as well as USA Today, all together leading six Pulitzer Prize-winning projects, before starting a new Conde Nast magazine called Portfolio. But when that magazine collapsed, and everyone lost their jobs, including Lipman, she turned to her strengths and reported in-depth about the nature of change in the world, creating a book called “Next!”

That relatively new book, published in 2023, shares anecdotes from hundreds of interviews Lipman conducted, looking for patterns that can help readers, some of which she shared Wednesday night at UH Mānoa during a Better Tomorrow Speaker Series event, co-sponsored by the UH Journalism Program. This video documents the event.
