When you think about the highlights of a UH Mānoa sports game, you probably picture the incredible plays, the roaring crowd, or the intense emotions on the players’ faces. But have you ever wondered how those moments are captured?
Those aren’t just random snapshots, it is the work of a talented team of sports media photographers, who are often overlooked but play a crucial role in how we experience sports.
At UH Mānoa, the sports media team works tirelessly behind the scenes to capture these unforgettable moments. From the intensity on an athlete’s face to the raw emotion of a coach’s celebration, their job is about so much more than just pointing a camera. It’s an art that requires focus, timing, and creativity, all while navigating the fast pace of live sports.
“I look at all of the different posts and stories all of the time,” says Reyn Shirakata, a devoted UH Mānoa athletics supporter. “I really like the pictures of the teams here at UH, I think they’re very cool.”
Shirakata also pointed out that the UH Mānoa athletics Instagram page regularly posts action shots from the games, but the photographers behind them are rarely credited.
For the photographers, preparation is key. Before the game even begins, they’re scouting locations, setting up equipment, and planning for shots that will make the game’s energy come alive.
Capturing the perfect moment is about more than just the action on the field. “It’s more about finding the story beyond the game like capturing fans’ interactions with the players and signings afterwards and just like other reactions from the fans and around the atmosphere,” says Lauren Sharkey, a member of the media team.
For the photographers, the lack of recognition can be disheartening. For others, the work is more rewarding than the recognition from fans.
“I don’t really do it for the recognition,” said Brayden Kajiwara, a sports media manager. “I think if you’re doing it to get recognized, you’re probably in the wrong field. Even though you are out there [on the field or the court], there’s no reason to spotlight you.”
Regardless of their differing viewpoints on exposure, the media team works hard collaboratively to capture moments that transcend the game itself.
Their work doesn’t end when the game is over too. Hours are spent editing photos and videos, perfecting each one so it tells the story of the game. Social media has become a big part of the job, too, as their content reaches fans far beyond the stadium.
Despite the challenges and differing mindsets, their dedication allows us to relive the excitement, the emotion, and the beauty of sports, one photo at a time.
