In light of upcoming midterms, the counseling department at UH Mānoa hosted an event to raise awareness on career counseling and mental health services that are offered on campus. The event, “Anyone Can Be Anything,” was an opportunity for students to socialize amongst each other while partaking in arts and crafts.
“This event is based around the movie “Zootopia,” which has a lot of great themes about staying true to yourself,” said peer fellow Athena Huynh.
Huynh went on to elaborate on using this event as an opportunity to invite the Career Center representatives to help assist students in visualizing their futures. She added, “This helps people get to know a bit more about their career options and what they would like to do.”
The Career Center at UH Mānoa helps students to find employment opportunities, host workshops, and even offers career counseling. This is a great resource for college students transitioning into the workforce to feel better prepared.
“As the peer fellows, it’s our job to promote the important resources that the counseling center has,” said peer fellow Sagan Kurose.
Kurose highlighted that many students are unaware of what services the university offers and events like these help raise attention to them on campus resources.
“A lot of people have asked about the Peer Fellows on campus. They want to know more about the counseling center,” said Kurose. “We’ve introduced them to BASICS, which is the alcoholic awareness center here on campus. We’ve seen more and more people attending our events and asking about our services and how we can help them.”
Many of the events the Counselling and Student Development Center held on the Mānoa campus are very hands-on with the intention of fostering student engagement. Things like crafts, beadmaking and slime were offered at the event.
“We’ve found that by providing a space for people to actually sit and make things, they tend to talk more,” said Huynh.

In May, the Counselling and Student Development Center will hold another mental health event.
