Thousands of fans gathered April 24, as Kawaii Kon—Hawaiʻi’s largest anime and pop culture convention—opened its doors, bringing together cosplayers, artists, and enthusiasts from across the islands and beyond.
Held at the Hawaiʻi Convention Center, the three-day event transformed the venue into a hub of color and creativity. Attendees filled the halls in elaborate costumes inspired by popular anime, manga, and video game characters, while others browsed rows of vendors and artists showcasing original work, prints, and collectibles.
Since 2005, Kawaii Kon has long served as a cornerstone event for Hawaiʻi’s anime and gaming community, offering a space for fans to connect both in person and through shared interests. This year’s convention featured a packed schedule of panels, workshops, and live events, including costume competitions, anime trivia sessions, rhythm game tournaments, idol dance performances, and appearances from voice actors and content creators.
The convention floor remained consistently busy throughout the weekend, with long lines forming for exclusive merchandise, featured panels, and special appearances. The artist alley and exhibitor hall were among the most heavily trafficked areas, highlighting the strong support for local creators and small businesses.
The community that Kawaii Kon fosters is also one of its strongest appeals. UH student Michaela Wada, who attended the event for the whole weekend for the first time this year, said she attended this year because her last experience was “such a fun and positive experience.”
Wada added that she thinks more people should go next year. “I think that the event is a great place to meet and interact with people who share the same interests as you,” she said. “There are many people who come from all over just to attend and share their love for anime and gaming.”
Beyond entertainment, Kawaii Kon also reflects the growing influence of anime and global pop culture in Hawaiʻi. The event draws a diverse crowd, from longtime fans to newcomers experiencing the convention for the first time, reinforcing its role as both a cultural gathering and a community-building space.
As the event wrapped up, attendees left with merchandise, photos, and shared memories—already looking ahead to next year’s convention.
