First Friday game in Mānoa in decades closes campus, welcomes Stanford

The University of Hawai’i at Mānoa band lined up to welcome the UH football team onto the Clarence T. C. Ching Athletics Complex field before a game against Stanford on Sept. 1, 2023. This was the first Friday football game on campus — causing a closure of the campus — since Aloha Stadium was condemned. The stadiumʻs closure forced UH to convert its practice field into a home field for its games, with makeshift bleachers, shown in the foreground, and portable luxury boxes added behind the bleachers on each sideline. UH administration has said the Friday game was scheduled before the Aloha Stadium situation emerged, and no further weekday games will be planned at UH. Diamond Head and the Waikiki cityscape are in the background.
