Inspired by the sight of colorful mopeds across the campus of University of Hawai’i at Mānoa, Bradley Jones, a freshman from California, decided to give them a try.
“I started using a moped the first semester,” said Jones. “It seemed very convenient, I saw so many people using them so I went to buy one asap. I now understand why they are everywhere, I have no regrets.”
The sound of buzzing mopeds have become a familiar backdrop to campus life. These two-wheelers have carved out a significant niche among students in Mānoa.
For many students, especially those who have relocated from the mainland, mopeds offer convenience, affordability and independence. Providing the option to travel on your own schedule, without having to purchase a car or rely on TheBus.
“The majority of our customers are UH students,” said Danny Shin, the owner of Apex Mopeds. “Mopeds are cheaper on gas, and parking for cars can be more difficult. So it’s a no-brainer – I totally recommend them!”
The popularity of mopeds among UH Mānoa students is evident. Whether it’s zipping from dorms to grocery stores or heading to the beach, a moped provides an efficient way to get around.
“Mopeds are super reliable and fun vehicles,” said Gerard Santos, from Moped Direct. “A lot of UH students come to our shop.”
With the advantages of mopeds, there are still some challenges to consider. Theft can be a concern—stolen mopeds on campus are not uncommon. Yet the benefits seem to outweigh the cons for many.
“Finding storage can be tough,” admitted Robert Harvey, a UH freshman. “But for me, I decided on a moped because it’s still easier than dealing with a car. It has been a big help so far!”
Beyond the logistics, mopeds symbolize a sense of freedom that resonates with the UH Mānoa college experience. Students love the ability to explore their surroundings on their own terms, on a more convenient vehicle.
“My advice for students who decide to get a moped is to get a permit for campus as soon as possible,” Harvey emphasizes, highlighting the importance of utilizing campus resources to avoid parking issues.
