The North Shore of Oahu recently hosted a gathering of big-wave surfers, safety experts and ocean enthusiasts for the 2023 Big Wave Risk Assessment Surf Responder Summit. Hosted by the Big Wave Risk Assessment Group (BWRAG), the final summit of the year brought together a community of all ages and skill levels dedicated to expanding their knowledge of safety to better the world of ocean sports.
Held at YMCA Camp Erdman, the summit boasted an impressive lineup of renowned watermen and women, such as Paige Alms, Greg Long and Brian Keaulana, all sharing insights intended to educate the next generation of surf responders.
On day one, lifeguards Brian Keaulana and Patrick Tim taught the importance of ocean risk management, and professional Maui paramedic and big wave surfer Andrea Moller covered advanced first aid. Participants learned life-saving skills, such as how to apply tourniquets and identify various injuries, while also earning CPR/AED certification.
Day two expanded on safety even further by emphasizing the importance of having an emergency action plan when traveling and introducing the idea of using drones to aid in identifying swimmers in need of aid. Big wave surfer Greg Long taught mindful breathing techniques and shared tips on surviving a big wave wipeout. Finally, attendees had the opportunity to practice open-water rescue techniques using jetski and surfboards to retrieve swimmers in danger.
