January 17 was not only opening day for the Hawai’i State Legislature, it also was the 131st annual commemoration of the illegal overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom. ‘Onipa’a is a word used by Hawai’iʻs former Queen, Liliuokalani, which means “steadfast.” Itʻs used for the commemoration today as a way to encourage persistence among the Kanaka Maõli to unite and stay community-engaged to tell their stories.
